Currently this course is being taught (or has been taught) to nurses and other health professionals in twenty five States from Alaska to Florida to Maine. Please see locations for current schedule. If there is no course in your area and you are interested to coordinate one, please click here.

This is an in-depth course and considerable student input is required. Students have to complete 33 case-studies and a small study on 8-12 subjects using a set methodology. Students present their findings to an external assessor at the certification exam. The rationale behind this is to show that clinical aromatherapy is effective, safe and cost-effective. As a direct result of this assessment process, several universities are now including clinical aromatherapy and the 'm' technique® as electives, and hospitals are looking to include aromatherapy as part of their healthcare.

The choice of study is decided with the help of the instructor during tutorials in Modules 4 and 5. During the first tutorial, the instructor advises the student on suitable studies, patient population, study design, randomization, selection of oil/s and method of application. During the second tutorial, progress is discussed. These studies will be assessed for publication and it is hoped that over the next few years they will be published in main-stream nursing and other peer-reviewed journals. Some students, such as Karobi Sachs of Massachusetts, have gone on to win the 1999 Massachusetts Nursing Award of Excellence. Her study was entitled Aromatherapy can empower women living in a women's refuge.

33 clinical case-studies are carried out on 33 single essential oils and the results are discussed in class. (This is quite different from all other aromatherapy trainings which emphasize blends.) The results of literally thousands of single essential oil case-studies are currently being prepared to be entered into a data-base. It is hoped that these studies will provide much needed evidence of the efficacy of essential oils on humans, used either topically and inhaled. It is also planned that the database will be be available through the Internet. We are currently looking for funding.
