Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  • Describe the historical path (ancient and modern) of clinical aromatherapy
  • Outline the basics of plant taxonomy: genus, species, chemotype
  • Describe four extraction methods
  • Describe four methods of purity and quality control
  • Describe the potential role of essential oils in integrative medicine
  • Demonstrate five different methods of using essential oils
  • Label a diagram of olfaction
  • Compare psychotherapeutic, esthetic and clinical aromatherapy
  • Compare the clinical potential properties of 33 essential oils
  • Describe the role of essential oils in infection
  • Describe an aromatogram
  • Identify symptoms of acute and chronic stress
  • Differentiate between an allergic and sensitivity skin reaction
  • Describe plant biosynthesis
  • Discuss the importance of functional groups
  • Critically examine essential oils in inflammatory disease
  • Critically examine essential oils in insomnia
  • Critically examine essential oils in pain
  • Describe essential oils in cancer and palliative care
  • Discuss essential oils in women's health.
  • Discuss essential oils in the treatment of HIV/AIDS
  • Conduct a small clinical study
  • Create protocols and policies

How objectives will be evaluated

Evaluation is through:

  1. Written exam: 3 hours
  2. Oral presentation of project/research/project: 20 minutes

All parts of the exam are externally marked. Students also complete 33 case-studies on 33 essential oils. Case-studies are given to the instructor prior to the exam. A small self-directed study is presented at the oral examination.
