Mary Jo Assis, MS, RN, A.P.N., C., HN-BC

Mary Jo’s career in nursing spans 26 years and includes experiences in critical care nursing, clinical education, home care and, more recently, as a nurse practitioner. She is the Director for Advanced Practice Nursing at The Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, NJ.  In this position, she is responsible for oversight of Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) and development of new APN services and projects throughout the Valley Health System.  She is a past graduate of the Integrative Healing Arts Program and Project Director for the New Jersey Health Initiatives grant, A Return to Caring and Healing: Enriching the Professional Practice Environment for Registered Nurses. 

Mary Jo obtained her diploma in nursing from the Englewood Hospital School of Nursing, her BSN from St. Louis University and a master’s degree from Pace University as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the American College of Nurse Practitioners, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Holistic Nurses Association, the New Jersey State Nurses Association and the Forum for Nurses in Advanced Practice.  She co-founded the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the Forum which provides educational and networking opportunities for APNs in Northern New Jersey.  She recently achieved certification as a holistic nurse from the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Center. 

Mary Jo trained in the ‘m’ technique with Jane Buckle and was invited to be an ‘m’ technique instructor in January 2005. Mary Jo has been pivotal in creating nursing policies at Valley Hospital to integrate the ‘m’ technique into nursing practice. Mary Jo is currently completing the Aromatherapy for Health Professionals course and she is writing policies and protocols to integrate aromatherapy into nursing practice at Valley Hospital.
