In May 2005, it was decided to divide the Aromatherapy for Health Professionals training (which currently includes both the 'm' and clinical aromatherapy) into 2 separate courses; a) Clinical Aromatherapy and b) the ‘m’ technique® Certification Course.

The CCAP training has been updated and expanded and is renamed Clinical Aromatherapy for Health Professionals. Only the hand 'm' technique® will be taught (Module 1).

Length
The course comprises four modules, each one over two days, usually a weekend. The weekends are spread out over 12 months. Each module is 9 am - 6 pm making up 68 taught hours plus 182 hours of student effort. In special circumstances a missed module can be made up by arrangement with the instructor. The modules should be taken in consecutive order.

Homework & Exam
There is homework in the form of case studies, one for each essential oil covered. These need to be completed between each module and give the student practical experience of using essential oils in a clinical way. The exam is in 2 parts – a written test and presentation of a small study – both parts are externally assessed.

Certification
Certification as a Clinical Aromatherapy Certified Practitioner (CCAP) is awarded after completion of 33 case studies and successful testing.

Cost
Each module is $375 for non-AHNA members and $350 for AHNA members and Planetree employees. The exam is the same cost as a module. In addition there is the cost of materials. Essential oil packs for each module range from $55 for Module 1 to $130 for Module 4. The text-book, Clinical Aromatherapy: Essential Oils in Practice, available directly from www.elsevier.com or www.amazon.com. The course and materials may be tax deductible, depending on your state.

The 'm' technique®

The 'm' technique® is a registered method of structured touch. It is suitable for use in clinical settings when massage may be inappropriate either because the receiver is too fragile, or the giver is not trained in massage. The 'm'® is a series of stroking movements performed in a set sequence. Each movement, identified with a mnemonic name, is repeated a set number of times at a set pressure (more detail)

The technique was created by Dr. Jane Buckle, a critical care nurse, and is useful for the critically ill, very fragile, before invasive medical procedures or when the give is not trained in massage. The 'm' technique® is gentle and soothing and has been called "physical hypnotherapy" and “physical meditation”. This technique is simple to learn, quick to do and produces a measurable relaxation response.

The 'm' technique® is registered with the Patent and Trademark Office. The 'm' stands for manual.
